Alan Guffy is an associate in the firm’s Guardianships, Estate & Trust Planning, Elder & Special Needs, and Business Transactions practice groups. He has a diverse practice focusing on Medicaid planning, trusts and estates, and corporate transactions. Mr. Guffy is a member of both the North Carolina and South Carolina bars and represents clients in both states.
Mr. Guffy represents individual clients in matters of estate planning, estate administration, and real estate transactions. His estate planning and administration practice includes business succession planning, wills, durable and health care powers of attorney, competency & guardianship proceedings, and advising on and implementing revocable and irrevocable trusts. Mr. Guffy also advises clients on Medicaid planning matters, elder care, special needs trusts, and the modification of existing irrevocable trusts. Once planning is in place, Mr. Guffy advises clients on the proper way to administer trusts and estates and has experience representing fiduciaries in non-tax controversies including breach of fiduciary duty claims and family settlement agreements. Mr. Guffy’s real estate experience includes representing both residential and commercial clients in matters of lease preparation and negotiation, homeowner association representation, and land purchase agreements.
Mr. Guffy has represented corporate clients in a wide variety of matters including acquisitions, buyouts, and corporate structuring / formation. Mr. Guffy also advises clients in intellectual property protection matters. His clients span a broad spectrum of industries, including professional sports, automotive, aerospace, healthcare technologies, firearms, and commercial development companies. He has also advised employers in matters of policy development, employee contracts, risk management, and statutory compliance.
A native of Camden, South Carolina, Mr. Guffy graduated summa cum laude from Wofford College in 2009 and cum laude from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2012. Mr. Guffy is an active member of the Mooresville Young Professionals, a division of the South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the Board of Directors of Community Foundations, the Evening Exchange Club of Greater Mooresville-Lake Norman, and SCAN of Iredell. Mr. Guffy is a member of the North Carolina Bar Estate Planning and Elder Law sections and a volunteer with North Carolina Legal Aid’s Lawyer on the Line service.
