Tips from Your Divorce Lawyer: How to Communicate with Your Spouse During Divorce

• Set boundaries for talking to your ex. You are both very familiar with each other after being married, but this does not mean you need to communicate with your former spouse when you don’t want to. Stick to divorce-related topics only and refrain from engaging in extra conversation.

• When having a conversation with your ex, try to keep your tone as businesslike as possible. If you feel upset and angry before a conversation, give yourself some time to step back and calm down. You can always come back to the conversation later.

• Refrain from talking about your ex on social media. If you feel the need to vent your anger and frustrations, do so to a close friend, family member, or your therapist instead of online.

• When you do end up talking to your former spouse, try to focus on present issues. If you find that you are talking about past issues and participating in a heated conversation, do not be afraid to end the discussion.
